Body of baby boy found blocks from Loganville school

The body
of a baby boy, wrapped in a bag used for disposing of biohazardous
waste, was found by the side of a narrow residential road
in Walton County Sunday.
The infant,
weighing about 5 pounds, was fully developed and may have
been a full-term birth or close to it, sheriff's authorities
said.
A passer-by
found the body on Rockmore Road in unincorporated Walton County
about 9 a.m. Sunday.
The body
had been wrapped along with the placenta in a plastic bag
from Kmart, then placed inside a red biohazard bag.
Sheriff's
Sgt. Jeff Johnson said authorities, who do not have any leads
in the case, are hoping the bag might yield a clue.
"It's not
one of those everyday things that people have around," Johnson
said. "You may have access to it if you're in the medical
field or in law enforcement or something specific like that."
The body
may have been left at the location as early as Friday, authorities
said.
Authorities
are treating the death as a homicide until an autopsy reveals
the cause of the baby's death.
"Basically,
we're hoping someone in the community will come forward if
they've seen anyone pregnant for several months and suddenly
that person's not pregnant anymore and doesn't have a baby,"
Johnson said.
The discovery
was the talk of residents who live in the area, a few blocks
away from Loganville High School.
Annie
Ramey, 63, who has lived in the neighborhood for more than
30 years, said until now police activity in the area had been
limited to a car running off a curb on the road.
"I couldn't
understand why somebody would put out a baby in a bag like
that," Ramey said. "Evidently, they wanted it to be found.
It was out right in the open."
Anyone
with information is asked to call the Walton County Sheriff's
Department at 770-267-6557.
